Frankie Ashun, Afternoon Show Host
Frankie Ashun was born in Apple Valley, California but raised in the Dayville/Danielson area of the Quiet Corner. Frankie has always been a people-oriented person, they enjoy meeting new people and learning about them further than “Hi, hello, how are you.” Frankie first realized this attitude could mirror their professional life while taking Mr. Hoskin’s Speech and Communications class at Killingly High School. Rest in peace Mr. Hoskins, you changed lives!
Frankie studied Communications and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Connecticut where they were the Student Coordinator of the peer health education group The UConn Sexperts, presenting to dozens to hundreds of students at a time. Frankie was also a research assistant for the Department of Communication, focusing on Black women’s unique communication styles. They are published in the Departures in Critical Qualitative Research journal. Before working at WINY, Frankie worked in the fields of case management, research, behavioral healthcare, and education. Thank you Grandma for finding WINY Radio’s help wanted posting in the Turnpike Buyer.
When Frankie isn’t infodumping on air, they spend their time volunteering as cast and crew for Chestnut Street Playhouse in Norwich, where they also hold a Board Member position. Frankie loves horror movies, the loudest music you could possibly imagine, reading tarot, investigating astrology, video games, and spending as much time as possible with their friends and family.
